Massapequa Preserve is a wooded escape in the heart of Massapequa on Long Island. Officially named the Peter J. Schmitt Massapequa Preserve, it covers 423 acres according to Nassau County. Its paths, stream and lakes make it a local spot for walking, cycling, fishing and nature photography.

It is right in the middle of the suburbs, but once you are among the trees it can feel like you are in the middle of a forest. Sunset over the lake is a particularly beautiful inland view.

Trails and bike paths

The Nassau-Suffolk Greenbelt Trail begins at Merrick Road and Ocean Avenue and runs through the preserve. The paved bike route connects with the Bethpage Bikeway for a longer ride north. Start with our trail guide and Bethpage Bikeway guide to choose your route.

Nassau County lists the preserve at Merrick Road and Ocean Avenue, Massapequa, NY 11758. The preserve extends north to the Southern State Parkway. Our directions and parking guide explains access near the reservoir and Massapequa train station. Check posted parking signs before leaving your car.
