Benefits of Massapequa Preserve
Massapequa Preserve gives Long Island residents and visitors a place to enjoy freshwater habitats, wooded paths and time outdoors. Its value comes from both the natural landscape it protects and the everyday opportunities to walk, cycle, fish and observe wildlife.

Protecting freshwater habitats
Nassau County describes the preserve’s freshwater swamps, marshes, stream, lakes and sandy-bog areas. These habitats support a variety of plants, including rare orchids, sundews and bladderworts identified by the county. Our plant guide and wildlife observations offer starting points for exploring the landscape.
Walking, cycling and shoreline fishing
The preserve’s walking trails and paved bike path offer options for a short outing or a longer trip toward Bethpage State Park. The lakes and stream provide places to pause and enjoy the scenery.
Massapequa Reservoir also offers shoreline fishing. DEC’s reservoir information lists access and fish species and states that boats are prohibited. Check our fishing guide for links to official information.
Learning through observation
A walk can be an informal introduction to wetland plants, birds and seasonal changes. Take time to look and listen, keep to established paths and leave plants and wildlife undisturbed. For a first visit, our directions and parking guide will help you choose an entrance.
